Spring in Baltimore
April 23, 2009, 9:09 am View CommentsHere’s a little Thursday-morning video zen for you.
I shot this video over the weekend when we had our first really spring-like day in Baltimore. Looks like this weekend is going to top that.

Bacon and Beer Happy Hour at Bad Decisions
April 17, 2009, 11:29 pm View CommentsTuesday, Bad Decisions in Fells Point hosted its third Bacon and Beer Happy Hour!
Look for cameos by Twitter superstars @maryvale, @spamspam, @bad_decisions, @christianparent, and @amywoo!
Kudos to John and everybody else at Bad Decisions for putting on such a great event. I can’t wait for the next one, no matter what my arteries say.
Update: I apologize if the video and audio are out of sync. It would appear that Vimeo is having some issues. The video worked fine on Friday, but the embed looks hideous today. I suggest checking out the video’s Vimeo page if you run into trouble.
Update 2: Looks like something is wrong with the non-HD video encode. I’m trying to get in touch with someone at Vimeo who can help me fix it.
Update 3: The kind folks at Vimeo re-encoded the video, so it should all be working properly now.

New Music Tuesday - April 7, 2009
April 7, 2009, 7:24 pm View CommentsI can always tell when it’s spring. Baseball season starts. The trees in my neighborhood start to bloom (and my allergies kick in). And amazing music comes out more regularly, building a future playlist for the warmer months ahead.
Doves — Kingdom of Rust
I was first introduced to Doves with their album Some Cities. I was painting fresh drywall on the ceiling of a room in a house where I lived at the time, and “Black and White Town” came on the radio. For whatever reason, that song stuck with me through that spring and summer, but was somehow retired from frequent rotation on my iPod as the weather got colder.
Now they’re back with a slightly darker-sounding album, wrapped in a healthy dose of reverb that sounds almost like it was borrowed from the 1960s in places. There are elements of other UK-based bands on this Doves album, either a sign that artists the British music scene builds healthily off each other, or that they’re constantly ripping each other off. From the song clips available on iTunes and Amazon, I can’t quite figure out which sign it is.
Kingdom of Rust sounds like it could be the kind of album that you could easily let wash over you as it plays in the background while you open the windows and let spring air meander through your house while you take care of other chores. But if you took the time to really get into the music, it seems also like the kind of album that reveals something new with each listen.
I really, really wish I had the spare cash to pick up this album today. Though it’ll have to wait, it’s at the top of my “Music to Buy” list.
Bat for Lashes — Two Suns
The first Bat for Lashes song I heard was “Horse and I”, and it was one of those songs that made me pull over and write down the name of the artist so I could track down the album and song later. That album, Fur and Gold, was one of my favorites of 2007.
There’s a bit of an electro-pop sensibility to some of the tracks on Two Suns. At first, tracks like “Pearl’s Dream” and “Daniel” sound almost too polished, but as you dig down past the surface, it’s obvious that there’s a lot more going on with the songwriting than slick production.
Two Suns paired with Doves’ Kingdom of Rust would make an excellent soundtrack for lying on a hillside staring at clouds. I’ll have to test out this theory and report back.
